About Loving Burns

ROBERT BURNS IS DEAD, LONG LIVE ROBERT BURNS!

Alicia Devine returns to 2009’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe with her one- woman version of Loving Burns a play about the women in Burns’ life and their memories of what it was to love him.

What the press said last year after selling out at the Roxburghe Hotel:

Original and Different…Devine sings the songs beautifully” - The Herald

Breathtaking-gave me goosbumps all over” -Three Weeks

Adapted from her earlier piece Burns Night - a sell-out in 2003, Alicia says: “I’m a lover of Burns and wish I had been!”

This play is a fresh and frank look at a man whose Immortal Memory is in serious need of a makeover.

Veteran of such diverse productions as ‘Rab.C Nesbit’, ‘Rebus’ and ‘Trial and Retribution’ Alicia says, ‘Loving Burns is as relevant today as any show I’ve been in. In this year of the Homecoming, it’s a great time to be spreading the word about him with such a refreshing point of view’

Loving Burns will forever change the view that Burns is about haggis, turnip, tatties and badly spoken poetry!

Loving Burns is about Rab: son, lover, husband, father. What was it like to love him? Who is going to own his memory?

The women who knew him tell it like it was!
With poetry, songs and correspondence woven through the play, we are drawn in to the reality of loving a complex, flawed but ultimately, charismatic man who changed not only these women’s lives, but also the face of Scottish culture.
