8th August
Opening morning..and what a crowd, well over half-full it seemed to me; not that I could really see before I actually started. But once underway , it seemed a sizeable and friendly audience. Afterwards I found out there were 43people there, more than the capacity of my venue last year. All the work of the rehearsals with my director Katrina Caldwell was well served. It seemed as if the play had been written for the space: atmospheric, intimate; glimmering with candle-light (at 10.30 in the morning) and expectation. The audience seemed to enjoy me weaving in and out and interacting with them. I loved it. I think this is the form the play has always longed for. It feels just right. Hey-ho for the run! After the show, in the afternoon, I found myself up at Fringe Central, the hub of the festival’s administration. There was a press junket going on and I stood in a queue with thoosands of others, many much more bizarrely dressed than myself, waiting to speak to the Arts editors of all the papers you’d want your show to be reviewed in, particularly the Scotsman. Theirs was the longest queue. I got chatting to a few other fellow actors around me and exchanged flyers and made a mental note of the show I definitely want to see (THREE WOMEN by SYLVIA PLATH at the Assembly Rooms ) Before long there I was, with Peter Henderson-that wonderful gentle man who is the powerhouse behind the restaurant, sitting in front of Tim Cornwell of the Scotsman selling our venue and the show to him. We’ll see. I’m not on again until next Saturday, would be nice if I got some press, but it’s hellishly difficult when you’ve done the same show before. I’m quite philosophical, it’s just a delight to be performing. After the junket, Peter and I went into the Udderbelly compound at George Square to flyer. As we were approaching the entrance, a young woman, on a bike called over to us. Turns out she saw the show last year at the Roxburghe, said she worked for the National Trust for Scotland and that herself and her colleagues who had come with her had loved it ! I was pleased. It augurs well for a good run!
